5 star | Great! OTA DVR

We got this to replace the Recast that Amazon no longer makes. The Tablo 4th Generation 4 Tuner is really good. (We did not purchase their antenna - so no review of that.) We use the Tablo with our ROKU because the ROKU Tablo App includes closed captioning, whereas the LG TV Tablo App does not yet include captioning. We attached it with a cable to our ClearStream 2Max antenna (purchased in 2021). We attached the Tablo to our router with an Ethernet Cable, which our house is wired for. We were surprised to get 138 stations. We are not close to the transmission towers. Yet we get all of the local channels, including PBS. We had previously tried the flat antennas that can be attached to the wall or window, but did not have good results.
We just added a WD 2TB Elements Portable External Hard Drive. All we had to do was plug it into the port and Tablo asked us if we wanted to format the new drive. It only took a couple of minutes to format and then it worked immediately. Note: You have to format from the first app you used to set up the Tablo. We have the Roku app for Tablo on three TVs. The set up for the new drive only came up on the Roku Tablo app on the TV that we first used the Tablo App on, not on the other two TVs. Western Digital Elements is one of the external drives recommended by Tablo for the 4th Generation Tablo.
The Tablo and this ClearStream antenna are providing really high quality 4k images on the TV. Attached are photos of part of a vase from an OLD Antiques Roadshow episode, which was probably not 4k, and a photo of the antenna. I would expect newer antennas would be even better. Ours just sits on some boxes below a high window.
We were really surprised by the high quality of the Tablo. It is worth it to just spend some money and get a good antenna. The antenna in our photo is a ClearStream 2Max indoor/outdoor antenna (which we use indoors). It was worth money because it works great!
We do have one of the flat wall antennas attached to a tv. It does not get many stations and not even all of the local stations. We noticed that when it rains, the flat antenna's image is damaged, but with the better antenna on the Tablo, watching the same time of the same program, there was no interference in the picture. Get a good an antenna so you will not be disappointed.
